 Roof Rails
Roof rails or side rails are vehicles with factory-installed rails. These rails are flushed against the roof or slightly raised off the roof which typically runs front to back on either side on the roof.

 Fixed Point
Some vehicles have fittings that are reinforced lugs in the roof, these are pre fitted on the roof or they have pre-threaded screw holes that are attached with roof rails as desired depending on the need for storage.

 Flush Rails
Flush rails run similar to the typical roof rails that run front to back on either side of the car. The roof rails will flush to the surface of the car roof. Typically there will be no space between the rail bottom and the car roof top.

 Rain Gutter
These are older roof racks that were typically mounted directly onto the gutter that surrounds the roof line of the vehicle.

 Bare Roof
Bare roof means the attachments are not on the roof. Most modern vehicles, which typically do not have gutters, can have an attachment of roof rack installed to the edge of the door frame, which serves the purpose.

 Factory Bars
There are vehicles that have a factory-installed roof rack permanently attached to the roof.

Typical installation
(Removing carriers when not used and refitting)
You can absolutely fit the roof rack by yourself. This simple DIY job has five pointers that you need to keep in mind while fixing and removing.
1. Although this is DIY (do it yourself). You will need a second pair of hands for ease of installation and reduced damage/scratches on your vehicle.
2. Read the instructions – it is smart to read the instructions. It may contain essential information especially the fitting position, the torque setting etc. So it is important to read the instructions and follow them carefully while installing.
3. Clean your roof before beginning and keep it clean during the fitting as well. The dust or dirt that gets trapped between the mounting points or the support system and the roof surface may scratch the paint work off your car. Therefore, ensure the roof is clean before and throughout the fitting.
4. Lubricate them. A small quantity of copper grease on all the bolts can ensure easy removal of the roof. This way you can have trouble-free installation and dismantle the roof system easily.
5. Torque settings – It is essential you get the torque setting right. Over tightening of the roof rack can damage the car. So pay attention to the details on the instruction manual and precisely follow them.
